Zone and PPE monitoring across eleven active sites

Site cameras were recording for insurance but nobody was watching them live. We added edge units behind the existing camera estate to flag exclusion-zone entries and missing PPE, and routed alerts to the supervisor on shift.

The challenge

Eleven sites with mixed camera hardware, unreliable uplinks and no appetite for a control room. Anything that required constant bandwidth or a person monitoring a wall of screens was not going to be adopted.

What we did

  1. Audit of the installed camera estate and network conditions at each site
  2. One edge unit per site, pulling from existing cameras over RTSP
  3. Zone definitions drawn per site by the safety team, not by us
  4. Detections routed to the supervisor's phone, with a daily digest for the safety manager
  5. Designed to keep working with the site uplink down, syncing when it returns
  6. Staged rollout, two sites at a time, with a validation period at each

Outcome

Existing cameras became a live safety tool without new hardware at the camera end. Sites keep functioning when the uplink drops, and only structured events — never footage — leave the site.
